Kindle Fire HDX will set the tablet industry on fire

Amazon Kindle readers have traditionally been focused on being great e-book readers but not necessarily top notch tablets.

With the Kindle Fire HDX it appears this is going to change. Amazon are not interested in making money from these tablets but from getting you to use their services. Just like the console wars between the Playstation and Xbox this means that you are getting fantastic hardware at a bargain basement price (or actually at their loss) as they are keener to see you using their hardware than making profits.

Finally for under $300 you can get a 7" tablet with 1920x1200 pixel display with resolution of 323 PPI and perfect color accuracy. If you want to upgrade to the 8.9" then you get a 2560x1600 pixel (339 PPI) display. These devices put the Apple Retina display to shame! Add to that a 2.2GHz Quad Core Processor with 2GB RAM and on the 8.9" model an 8MP rear facing camera which can record 1080p video and a 720p HD front facing camera. The list goes on with custom Dolby Audio, 10 hours of in use battery life, up to 18 hours of standby battery life and available with 16, 32 or 64GB storage. Bundle this with Live on-device tech support from Amazon and these devices are unbeatable.

If you are looking for an Android device, comparable, if not better than an iPad or iPad Mini then the Kindle Fire HDX is the one to choose. At this price this might be the game changer for the tablet industry that we have been waiting for.

Replace your fax with fax to email

As landlines slowly disappear in this increasingly mobile society it can be expensive or complicated to work out how to keep your fax machine. I can hear all the techies saying "Why would you use fax?" but for many industries and in many countries (i.e. Japan) fax is still a requirement for daily business operations.

So what is the alternative? Growing in popularity and in providers is email to fax. The rather simple alternative which provides a virtual fax number and the ability to send and receive faxes via email.

Recently I had the need to identify a suitable vendor for a friend and took the opportunity to look at what was on offer in the market so here is a guide to Australian fax to email vendors.

Print Stalker 1.5.1

Print Stalker 1.5.1 has now been released. The latest updates include the ability to send a notification message reporting a count of the number of jobs in queue without deleting the jobs. This can also be used with a minute interval to report on jobs older than a specified time only.

The new notification alert is ideal if you are using the application to report on printers that are building up a back log of jobs. You can also use this to get a total count of jobs in queue each time a check is performed. You will only receive an email if the check returns results.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Release

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean has now been released and has already been pushed to Nexus devices this week.

My Nexus 7 received the latest update on Wednesday 31st and the update was seamless and straight forward.

While not a major feature enhancement from 4.2, the latest update of Jelly Bean provides a large number of stability and background improvements that enhance the usability of the device.

This includes a better camera, surround sound for Google Play Movies, improved keyboard and predictive dialpad, wifi location detection and graphics enhancements.

The biggest feature enhancement is Restricted Profiles allowing me to setup a much more simplified and secure profile for my son.

Drive Stalker 1.2, Process Stalker 1.3, Service Stalker 1.5

Drive Stalker 1.2, Process Stalker 1.3 and Service Stalker 1.5 have now been released. This release brings them up to date with the features from the latest Print Stalker 1.5 release earlier this week. The latest updates include the ability to send a notification message to all users on the current computer when an event occurs and the recording of events to a CSV log file which you can open in Excel or notepad to review events.

The new notification alert is ideal if you are using the application as a monitoring tool on client machines so that users can be notified of alerts.

The log file provides a great way to review the frequency and type of events that are being reported and provides a way to check that these are being diagnosed if your machine is not configured to receive notifications or send emails.

Monitoring Windows Event Logs

As a system engineer there are always problems, issues or activities on a server that you need to monitor, fix or be notified about. This could be a failing application pool in IIS affecting your web application, backup failures, auditing user account changes. It could also be an unexplained error you want to monitor.

Not many system administrators realise there is a built in feature in windows servers designed just for this purpose.

Let's look at some great examples:

  • When a print spooler error is reported restart the print spooler
  • When a backup failure is reported restart the backup or send an email
  • When IIS stops send an IISRESET command

All of these can be easily done in a few simple steps.

Print Stalker 1.5

Print Stalker 1.5 has now been released. The latest updates include the ability to send a notification message to all users on the current computer when an event occurs and the recording of events to a CSV log file which you can open in Excel or notepad to review events.

The new notification alert is ideal if you are using the application as a monitoring tool on client machines so that users can be notified of print job or printer errors on any of the printers installed on their machine, even if the printer is not actually connected to their machine.

The log file provides a great way to review the frequency and type of events that are being reported and provides a way to check that these are being diagnosed if your machine is not configured to receive notifications or send emails.

These great new features will soon be rolled out to the other applications in the Stalker suite of products.

TeamViewer Quick Support for Android and iOS

Finally there is a simple solution for supporting mobile devices....

Whether you are a support engineer, developer or the family tech go-to-guy, TeamViewer Quick Support is your new best friend.

Using the traditional TeamViewer application you can now connect to any Android or iOS device with the Quick Support application installed.

Get Real-time screenshots, chat and nudge users, push text to the device clipboard, push and pull wifi settings, pull system logs, see a list of installed apps and view running processes.

For those with Samsung, Sony or Alcatel One Touch devices you can also get full remote control of the device.

Best of all, just like the normal TeamViewer application all connections are secured with 256 bit AES encryption ensuring security of your information.
